For the first time this year staff members from Shrewsbury Town in the Community will be taking on the Vitality Big Half Marathon, taking place in London on Sunday 10th March 2019.

In the second ever edition of the Big Half, the team will taking part in the same event won last year by four time Olympic gold medallist and six time world champion, Sir Mo Farah. With over 11,000 runners entering the race last year there will be some tough competition indeed…

Ten members of staff are currently hard in training to prepare for the race, some more so than others!

To aid with preparations Health and Inclusion Officer, Sarah Hamer, who is competing in the race, has started a  weekly staff running club on a Monday evening to ensure that everyone is in top condition.

See below for info about some of our staff who are running the race and what their aims are!

Jamie Edwards – Head of Community

“I am currently trying to fit in training around work, family and not being run over! My aim is to manage to finish the race the same day I start!”

Andy Jones – Education Manager

“Although I have played football all my life, I have never really been a runner and especially now my legs have gone I am just hoping to finish the day without my knees packing in!”

Sarah Hamer – Health and Inclusion Manager

“I’m enjoying training with the rest of the team at STitC and am getting through by staying focused on my goal to achieve a Personal Best in a half-marathon and completing the race in one piece!”

Nigel Wellings – Partner Schools Officer

“I’m really enjoying training and having a target to work towards, that target being that I am still able to walk to the bar by the end of the half marathon!”

Scott Guilbert – Foundation Degree Student

“I’m currently training hard for the half-marathon and am willing to push myself as far as I need to make sure I cross the line- even if I have to crawl!'”

Laura Wellings – Administration and Safeguarding Officer

This will be my first ever half marathon! I am working hard with training to make sure I can reach the finish line. Hopefully I can keep up with everyone else!!! I will be enjoying a well-deserved wine at the end”

The team hopes to raise £1,000 to help contribute towards all the projects we run here at Shrewsbury Town in the Community. To help them reach their target, you can donate to our JustGiving page for the event here.
