On Thursday 18th July over thirty participants took part in Shrewsbury Town in the Community’s ‘Shrewsbury Town Sleepout’ with Shropshire Homes, spending the night in Montgomery Waters Meadow with nothing but sleeping bags to raise funds and awareness for homelessness across Shropshire.
A range of Shropshire businesses were represented along with Shropshire Homes such as Aico, Reech Media, Nick Jones Wealth Planning, Longmynd Travel, Lingen Davies, Rybrook BMW, Asset Surfacing, DM Recruitment and Shropshire Chamber of Commerce.
There was a somewhat damp end to the event as the rain rolled in at 5:30am, but most participants stuck around to see out the 12-hour event until 8am.
Our participants helped to raise over £5,000 so far which will be split between Shrewsbury Town in the Community and selected homelessness charities across Shropshire. A number of participants spoke out about why they took part in the event and what the cause meant to them.
Richard Sheehan commented “I believe strongly that in this day and age we must work collectively to eradicate rough sleeping. Humans should not have to sleep in potentially dangerous or unhealthy environments. I am privileged to support this initiative once more this year.”
Lisa Cordy also added, “I’ve been lucky in life to have had a loving and supportive family, always knowing I’ve had a home to go to and a bed to sleep in. Others are not so lucky and by sleeping out in this way for one night I hope to help contribute to this cause.”
