Shrewsbury Town in the Community were delighted to invite grassroots teams to participate in our first ever Summer Cup over the August bank holiday weekend.
The grassroots festival celebrated the official re-opening of the Ludlow Football Stadium by the Football Foundation following extensive renovation works by Shrewsbury Town in the Community.
The two day weekend festival took place in glorious summer conditions at the picturesque South Shropshire venue, with teams from Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire travelling to take part in the under 8’s – under 11’s categories.
The under 8’s tournament was a closely fought affair, with Kidderminster Athletic Hawks running out eventual winners. Leominster Town FC would finish a close second, with West Worcester Colts FC finishing in third position.
Shrewsbury Up & Comers Hawks took home the under 9’s trophy, with Mereside FC finishing as runners up. The Up & Comers finished the tournament with a perfect record of six victories from six games played, while Oakengates FC finished in third position behind the top two with Leominster Town FC completing the top four.
The second day of the Summer Cup saw the under 10’s and under 11’s teams take to the pitch on Sunday morning.
Shropshire based Bayston Hill Juniors overcame Herefordshire side Leominster Town FC in the under 10’s final which was a tight and nervy affair, before Bayston Hill broke the deadlock after 10 minutes. Leominster had plenty of chances but some smart saves from the Bayston Hill goalkeeper kept Leominster at bay.
The under 11’s final was contested by two Herefordshire sides in FC Phoenix and Toros FC. Phoenix would run out eventual winners over their close neighbours, claiming a 2-0 victory on the day.
Leominster Town FC, Leominster Town Colts, Shrewsbury Up & Comers and Llanymynech Juniors completed the standings.
Congratulations to all players and teams who took part in our first ever Summer Cup!
Steve Brotherwood, Shrewsbury Town in the Community’s South Shropshire Development Manager said after the tournament: “We would like to thank all the teams who took part in our first ever Summer Cup.
“We want to make this an annual event, and hopefully it will go from strength to strength and get bigger and better year on year.”
There is already a date in the diary for next year’s Summer Cup with the weekend of Saturday 1st – Sunday 2nd September 2018 reserved at the Ludlow Football Stadium.
