As always we have had a brilliantly busy half-term at Shrewsbury Town in the Community this October. Find out what we’ve been up to in the local community!
All week as usual we have held our half-term Soccer Schools providing children the opportunity to play football, stay active and meet new friends in a fully COVID secure environment with all relevant precautions being in place. A total of 368 children took part in our Soccer Schools with additional young people from our Volunteer Academy gaining valuable experience working alongside our delivery coaches. During breaks and lunch time, children also supported the National Trust by making some pom-poms for their Christmas tree!
Alongside this our Football Development teams have been put through their paces with some extra training camps to keep them on their toes and were also invited to take part in a boxercise session with Shrewsbury School of Boxing! This allowed players to gain an insight into a slightly different area of sport and fitness and provided a welcome way to break up the day. All our Boys and Girls Development Centre teams also played fixtures this week against West Brom, and Herefordshire FA, giving them some important game-time and a chance to display what they had learned so far in their weekly training sessions. Keep your eyes peeled shortly for our Team of the Week!
Our NCS Autumn delivery has given over 30 young people from across Shropshire the opportunity to develop various skills which could be beneficial to their employability such as team-working, mental health & resilience training as well as other fun activities such as rock climbing, axe-throwing and a driving experience!
The young people were also given the chance to plan and deliver social action projects to raise awareness of the effects of COVID-19 and lockdowns on the mental health of young people. As news of the second national lockdown broke over the weekend, the group also started to collect food to donate to the Shrewsbury Food Hub to help tackle poverty in the area. Millie, a participant on the programme was proud of the work the group managed to do. “We hoped by doing this, we could give people the little boost to show them that things are going to be okay and they’ll be able to get through this rough time. The experience and memories I have made within this programme will last a lifetime.”
