We would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who took part in Community and Armed Forces Day at the weekend! The day was a great success with over £1000 being raised so far which will continue to help us fund our projects and continue to help those in the local area realise their potential and achieve their goals.
There were numerous activities taking place around Montgomery Waters Meadow in the lead up to kick-off including a sponsored walk of our project participants from Gay Meadow. Luckily the weather held out making for a lovely 2-mile stroll in the sun! The participants were then welcomed into Montgomery Waters Meadow at half-time as they completed a lap of honour around the pitch led by the Army Cadet Band.
The morning also saw a Walking Football tournament held at the Community Football Hub with teams representing Shrewsbury Town, Monkmoor and national champions, Portsmouth FC, who went on to win the competition. We also held a Head’s Up football tournament in memory of one of our participants, Shaine Smith, which was won by Newtown FC.
As more fans started to arrive at Montgomery Waters Meadow they were greeted by members of the local armed forces who had taken over the fanzone, giving supporters the opportunity to see battlefield vehicles, a static helicopter, numerous other military displays and find out how closely linked the Armed Forces is to the local community.
We also welcomed the Little Rascals disco-dome to the Community Hub for our young supporters to have a boogie before the game along with our regular open area in the Community Hub with a colouring area and FIFA 19!
The day also saw Omar Beckles being presented with the PFA Community Champion Award for his outstanding contribution towards raising awareness about mental health issues within the local area.
We hope that everyone who attended had a fantastic day and as ever we are grateful for your support! Stay tuned for the final total of money raised.
